Platelet Rich Plasma therapy (PRP therapy) involves taking a small sample of blood and separating the Platelet Rich Plasma from the red blood cells using a centrifuge. The PRP is then injected into an individual’s problem areas. Platelets contain a high concentration of growth factors. These proteins help to heal injured tissue/damaged skin. When the PRP is injected the platelets release their growth factors which trigger surrounding cells to stimulate the skin to regenerate and repair. In essence Skin repair and rejuvenation is stimulated by PRP therapy.
All patients that are interested in having PRP therapy require an initial Consultation with one of our PRP nurse specialists. Patients will receive a thorough and in depth Consultation prior to treatment. Any potential contraindications related to an individuals medical history and medications will be assessed at this Consultation. A comprehensive treatment plan will be discussed and any questions answered.
On the day of treatment a blood sample is drawn. Photographs will be taken and a Consent form will be signed. Any makeup will be removed and a topical anaesthetic cream will be applied to the treatment area to help reduce any discomfort experienced. The blood sample is then separated by a centrifuge to separate the Platelet rich plasma from the red blood cells. The skin will be thoroughly cleansed with alcohol and the injections will commence. Post treatment ice may be used to help with swelling.
There are some side effects associated with Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy. Straight away after the procedure, patients will experience some bruising, swelling and redness following the injections. Mild discomfort/tenderness can be experienced most side effects have disappeared within a week or so.
